Ebook About Drawing on real historical documents but infused with the intensity of imagination, sly humor, and intellectual fire for which award-winning author Rivka Galchen’s writing is known, Everyone Knows Your Mother Is a Witch is a tale for our time—the story of how a community becomes implicated in collective aggression and hysterical fear. The year is 1619, in the German duchy of Württemberg. Plague is spreading. The Thirty Years War has begun, and fear and suspicion are in the air throughout the Holy Roman Empire. In the small town of Leonberg, Katherina Kepler is accused of being a witch. An illiterate widow, Katherina is known by her neighbors for her herbal remedies and the success of her children, including her eldest, Johannes, who is the Imperial Mathematician and renowned author of the laws of planetary motion. It’s enough to make anyone jealous, and Katherina has done herself no favors by being out and about and in everyone’s business. So when the deranged and insipid Ursula Reinbold (or as Katherina calls her, the Werewolf) accuses Katherina of offering her a bitter, witchy drink that has made her ill, Katherina is in trouble. Her scientist son must turn his attention from the music of the spheres to the job of defending his mother. Facing the threat of financial ruin, torture, and even execution, Katherina tells her side of the story to her friend and next-door neighbor Simon, a reclusive widower imperiled by his own secrets.Provocative and entertaining, Galchen’s bold new novel touchingly illuminates a society, and a family, undone by superstition, the state, and the mortal convulsions of history.Book Everyone Knows Your Mother Is a Witch: A Novel Review :
At the age of 70 in 1615, Katharina Kepler, an illiterate, cantankerous widow, was put on trial for witchcraft. As an herbalist, she was aware she was walking a fine line between life and death for those who came to her for cures. Like the plants she picked throughout the Leonberg countryside, she was capable of good or evil. For those she helped, Frau Kepler was a healer, for those who died or lost family members, she was a witch. The latter wanted her put on trial and put to death for consorting with the devil. As a mother of three sons and a daughter, she was envied by many for the devotion of her children and the defense during her trial by son, the famous astronomer, Johannes Kepler. The award winning author of this work, used the pamphlet Kepler wrote about his mother's trial and his defense of her. The questioning and testimony of many witnesses, for and against Frau Kepler are fictional, repetitive and rambling. This reviewer lost track of who was testifying and who was interrogating. Soldiering on to the end of the book, the verdict was anti-climatic and the reading experience disappointing. Katherina has been accused by a hysterical and jealous neighbor of being a witch. She says she isn’t one, but her meddling, sharp-tongued unsolicited advice isn’t gaining her any support in post-Reformation Germany. Her daughter-in-law scours the broad-sheets for salacious and disaster-mongering news (internet-scrolling, anyone?), and her son-in-law, a preacher who has trouble holding a congregation, would just as soon not have her in the house. Her next-door neighbor stands by her until, well, you know how it is… her children, though, are faithful to the end, but as she says, there’s no witchcraft, no divine intervention, a human death is just the same as an ox’s death…heresy! This is a very enjoyable read, and I paused so often to reflect on how little has changed beneath the surface.
